Chemotherapy Ports
Chemotherapy ports (sometimes called portacaths or subcutaneous ports) are small discs that connect to soft plastic tubes (catheters) which are surgically implanted into a vein in a patient’s arm or chest. The ports have a small opening just under the skin (which feels like a small bump) that allows a health care provider to quickly and easily administer medicine, chemotherapy treatments, blood transfusions, or liquids; or to take blood samples. Ports allow patients to avoid repeated needle sticks during a chemotherapy treatment regimen and are particularly useful for patients with small veins or veins that have been affected by repeated treatments. Ports can remain in place for an extended period of time as necessary for treatment.
